James Wade has just missed out on the big prize at the World Grand Prix13/10/2014 Direct from Unicorn Darts
James Wade has just missed out on the big prize at the World Grand Prix.
Michael van Gerwen was crowned champion for a second time after winning a thrilling final against the Unicorn star by 5 sets to 3.
There is no doubt that Wade did himself proud.
In the end, he just ran out of steam.....but what a week it was. The magical 9 darter, those fabulous wins against Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson and back up to No.5 in the world.
Without doubt, another big title isn't far away for the Unicorn man who gave it his all at the City West.
"I missed key doubles at crucial times and it cost me. Michael is the player to beat at the moment and I came close. I am back to where I want to be. I am back in business and the crowd support for me in Dublin was fantastic all week. I am very close to winning another big title and that is the challenge for me," Wade said.
And it is surely a given now that Wade will be back in the Premier League in 2015 after missing out on the tournament this year.
The final lived up to expectations.
The opening four sets were an arm wrestle and they were shared. At this stage it was Van Gerwen who was missing the doubles.
The match caught fire in the 5th set. The Dutchman missed three darts to break and Wade nailed D1....Van Gerwen hit a 76 finish and then he did break, but the World Champion couldn't get away in the next leg and Wade levelled. The deciding leg saw the Unicorn ace miss three darts at D10 to go 3-2 up in sets and Van Gerwen took out a brilliant 110 to pinch it.
Wade though hit back superbly. Van Gerwen was in control. A leg up and sat on 'tops' but back came 'The Machine' with a fantastic 141 check-out. It knocked his opponent out of rhythm and Wade made it three sets apiece!
He looked in control.....five consecutive legs to put him two clear in the 7th set but the match changed in one dramatic minute.
Wade missed three darts for the set and Van Gerwen hit back with three legs of his own including finishes of 106 and 86 to follow an 8th 180 and he led by 4 sets to 3.
Unfortunately this time, there was no coming back for Wade....it was a case of what might have been as he missed more doubles and a 9th 180 took Van Gerwen to the title.
"I have to say well done to James. He played so well all week. I am just so glad to win my second title in Dublin, the same as James. He is a great player." The words of Michael van Gerwen.
But take nothing away from James Wade. A great performance, a great tournament, great memories and a great chance to really challenge for the big TV titles over the next two months!
